The Sugar City
Orange Walk Town sits on the West bank of the New River and is the second largest city in Belize, but even here there is no over-development and the town has retained its authentic identity.
Orange Walk Town is a farming community at heart and this is evident from the bustling marketplace in the town centre where local merchants sell a wide variety of fresh local produce. In this busy cultural centre you'll hear not only English but a mix of Belizean Creole, Chinese, Taiwanese and German while goods arrive from nearby villages by horse drawn carriages.
The town is also the starting point for a boat trip up the beautiful New River to view the ancient Mayan Ruins at Lamanai where, after over 30 years of work, archaeologists continue to unearth massive structures forming a lost city which dates back to the 16th Century B.C.
