The island's natural glories are every bit impressive as its history and culture. The position between East and West, Europe and the Sahara have shaped these islands in terms of its geography and wildlife. There are over 1500 species of plant with 130 species endemic to Crete. In spring, this has got to be one of the most picturesque places in the world.
The mountains and gorges are a real stronghold for the wildlife here. The Limestone Mountains are topped with snow until late spring. The melting snow and warm sunshine bring a radiant display of flowers which make a perfect time for walking. The greatest walk however must be down the famous Samaria gorge, the deepest in Europe. Clambering below the cliffs with the sounds of goat’s bells and the Libyan Sea ahead, make for an unforgettable experience. This is also a special spot for bird watching too.
You will discover a wide variety of birds on the islands. Crete boasts the largest population of griffon vultures in Greece as well as being home to the extremely rare Lamergeir vulture, often seen circling over isolated mountain tops. Eagles are breeding here and species include the Lammergeir, Bonelli's, Booted and Golden. These islands are a major stopping point for the birds' migration towards Africa; amongst the many birds found here are the White Stork, Squacco Heron, Ruppell's Warbler, Red-footed Falcon, Bee-eater, Little Bittern, Crag Martin and the Blue Rock Thrush.
The chorus of birds in the wooded valleys provides background music to walks throughout the year, but in the summer this is mixed with the sounds of Cicadas and the hum of insects. At this time of the year you will find some wonderful butterfly displays from species such as the Swallowtail, Scarce Swallowtail, Cleopatra and the Eastern Festoon.
Crete is one of two areas in the Mediterranean where chameleons are found, but the more likely sight will be that of the Balkan or stripe-necked terrapin or Balkan green lizard. Other inhabitants of the island are the Cretan Ibex or Kriki, Wild Cat, Badger, Weasel and different types of Snakes. These animals are rarely seen near to resorts, but can be easily identified on a walk in the countryside.
The islands really are a spectacular sight and at night the stars are so bright here. Even at night you can see and hear the fruit bats fill the twilight air; whatever time of day there are a host of different attractions for you to enjoy.
