Pyrgos

The lovely village of Pyrgos on Santorini Island is situated 8km south-east of Fira. This village is built on the top of a hill and from which can be experienced a fascinating view of Mount Proitis Ilias and the rest of the island.

The village has a population of approximately 500 inhabitants and used to be the capital of the island until the early 1800s. The village is built around the Venetian castle and the small winding streets where many a tavernas are to be found;  follow the shape of the hill.

The village itself is quiet and quaint and has many churches all in different styles with beautiful frescoes. Here you will find the church that holds the presentation to the Virgin Mary, a popular tourist haunt on the island.
