Chetumal

Neighbour to the North

Chetumal is a cosmopolitan city just across the border in southwest Mexico. The capital city of Quintanta Roo, it provides instant access to museums, entertainiment and fine dining for those afternoons on which you're longing for that 'big city' feel. Chetumal is also a shopper's dream, with numerous malls, department stores and modern retail outlets.

The famous Museo de la Cultua Maya is a must-see attraction that's renowned for it's wealth of information about Mayan history, interactive exhibits and artifacts.

Just outside Chetumal, the Laguna de Siete Colores, or 'Lagoon of Seven Colours', is a natural marvel. Caribbean tides mix with fresh water , creating unique patterns of blue and green. Surrounded by mangroves and dense vegetation, this placid lake is perfect for kayaking, scuba diving or nearly any aquatic activity you can think of.

Just west of Chetumal lie the incredible Mayan ruins of Dzibanche and Kinichna. Secluded by massive ceiba trees the sparawling pyramids, plazas and temples cover more than 40 square kilometres. Only recently discovered and excavated, Dzibanche and kinichna are not yet frequented by tourists. In fact there's a good chance that you'll be left to wander the shady maze of ancient greens and grays and discover for yourself the secrets of the Maya.
