The Heart Of The Cayo District
Surrounded by lush rainforests and Mayan archeological sites the city of San Ignacio lies in the highlands of Western Belize close to the border with Guatamala.
The city is surrounded by signs of Belize's past; close by is the ancient city El Pilar which in turn offers stunning views over the city of Pilar Poniente across the Guatamalan border. Nearby is Xunantunich, a ceremonial centre notable for an awe-inspiring 13 story pyramid which towers over the surrounding trees and vegitation. Other local sites include the burial caves of Actun Chechem Ha, the temples of Cahal Pech and the pyramids of Tikal.
Despite it's ancient surroundings the city of San Ignacio is 'young at heart' and has gained a reputation for being a centre of 'eco-tourism' and thrill seeking. The city is home to numerous companies offering kayaking, canoeing, caving, hiking and biking tours and is surrounded by jungle lodges.
