Belmopan

The Garden City

Belmopan is located in the Cayo District highlands and serves as Belize's capital city, though only established in 1970 Belmopan is growing quickly as embassies and businesses migrate here and the city's university attracts more students.

Belmopan's location close to the intersection of two highways means it is the perfect base from which to explore the region and among the attractions within easy reach are the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve and the Guanacaste National Park offering a wealth of activities such as hiking and kayaking.

Other popular destinations in this area are St Herman's, home to an amazing series of caves including the stunning Crystal Cave, formed of sparkling limestone staligmites and staligtites, and Belize Zoo considered the best in Central America. You can also take the Hummingbird Highway south on a 90km journey through stunning mountain scenery to the coast.
