Cyprus lies at the crossroads of some of the greatest civilisations. It has had a turbulent past; its history is predominantly that of occupation. The conquerors have had a strong influence on the character of the island, leaving an impact on the land, in the arts and forming the bedrock of Cypriot culture. Only in its recent history has Cyprus gained independence, an independence that has not been without a heavy price. Cyprus today is a divided island, with the northern part occupied by Turkey. However, the beauty of this island is now richer than ever and has something to please everybody.
Civilisation in Cyprus developed slowly as a result of colonisation from the Asian and European land masses, and trade with the more mature cultures of ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt and Greece. When you come to the island you will notice some spectacular archaeological sites, you can travel back in time and relive the Roman rule at the Kourion amphitheatre, the introduction of Christianity to Cyprus at St Pauls pillar and the rule of Alexander the Great.
Another era to cherish on the island is the Byzantine reign; across the island you will see some stunning churches and icons showing this in all its glory. Amongst other historical events that are must sees are the journey of Richard the Lionheart at Limassol castle, the Venetian rule along with the Ottoman and British rule and then finally the glory of independence in 1960.
