Pets in Cyprus

Citizens of the European Union who wish to transfer their normal residence to the Republic of Cyprus may bring their pets with them but the following rules apply:

* The animal must not be intended for commercial purposes

* The animal must be intended for companionship (be a pet).

* The animal must be accompanied by its owner or by a person who is responsible for it at the time of importation.

You will also need to have specific documents and a certification of vaccinations and diseases must be produced. The following also needs to be processed:

* For identification purposes, the documents should relate to a tattoo or microchip on the animal.

* The disease certification should include a booklet issued by the vet, this should list the animals vaccinations and other medical details.

* An animal passport

* A veterinary certificate stating that the animal is free of disease

* Certificates stating that the animal has been given an anti-rabies vaccination and has been treated against a number of conditions such as infestation by tapeworm and external parasites.

If you wish to import an animal you should contact the veterinary service of the district you will be residing in for information about provisions which apply to animals below three months.

If you are bringing in a pet to Cyprus then you must inform the District Veterinary Station with details of your place of arrival and the date and time. You will also need to confirm the flight number which the animal will be carried across on, usually 24-48 hours before you fly. If certain or all of the requirements stated above are not met, the animal may be placed in quarantine in accordance with the local law.

No duty tax is payable in respect of animals being transferred to Cyprus provided that the animal is free of legal impediment, i.e. the animal was imported lawfully into the EU, with payment of the appropriate duties, or was bred in the EU.
